Nicole Cowgill
Grades 2, and 3 Parents, Welcome to our website! I finally got it up and running. We have been very busy our first few weeks of 2nd and 3rd grade--a good busy! I would like to update you on what we've been working on thus far. In Reading, we are dedicating a month to reading and studying a story called Abe Lincoln's Hat, as well as other books that relate to our theme. With this book, we have been learning new vocabulary words, making story sequence of event posters, discussing it, and are even going to make art projects based on our 16th president. In Writing, we've talked about what we do for our Writing Workshop, (write, draft, proofread/edit, make a final draft) and have completed two different writing assignments. We have practiced learning the editting marks I will be using on their paper to make it better. Many fun writing activities to come! For Spelling, we are on Week 3 and have been studying our spelling words all sorts of neat ways--on spelling computer games, rainbow words, pyramid words, magazine cutouts, decoding, and crossword puzzles. They are to bring their spelling notebooks home every night to practice with a parent/guardian and return the next day with a signature. In Social Studies, we spent the first week learning about being a good citizen and helping our community. This week, I have introduced them to timelines and how to create one. We are using Abe Lincoln's life as an example. They have also made their own timeline based on their day at school. Math- 2nd graders will have their first test on Friday. The test will be over adding with 2 and 3 addends, adding doubles, doubles plus 1, and drawing pictures to solve math problems. 3rd grade has been working hard on addition, subtraction, and fact families. Our Science unit on Health/Nutrition will start this week. Phonics/Grammar: 2nd-We are reviewing beginning, middle and ending consonant sounds, nouns, and what makes a sentence. 3rd -We are studying syllables and different types of sentences. Our first weeks of school in a nutshell! Thank you for visiting! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask me. English 9 and 10 Additional links on this topic:
